Closely related to the blueberries, this compact and hardy shrub is as decorative as it is productive. Its rich green foliage has a soft lustre, and in summer, small white bell-shaped flowers appear along the stems. Bright red berries soon start to develop as the flowers fade and these remain attractive for several months, ripening slowly before being ready to harvest. A decorative as well as productive plant, it is ideal for kitchen gardens, mixed borders or patios.
- Garden care: Prepare the ground well before planting. Prune in winter, cutting out dead or damaged branches. In spring, feed with sulphate of ammonia, sulphate of potash and bonemeal and top-dress with ericaceous compost. The plants are self-fertile, however for a bumper crop of berries, it is advisable to plant several plants in a cluster so the bees can easily cross pollinate them.
